Getting Around St. Martin/St. Maarten
The usual mode of transportation for the islanders is to hop aboard the little vans, called “Jitneys,” which have signs that indicate where they are going. However, touring the entire island by bus is not practical.
Guests of St. Martin villas will feel more comfortable renting their own vehicle, which we highly recommend. Your US driver’s license is accepted, and driving is on the right side of the road just like at home. Most of the roads are in fairly good repair.
CaribbeanDays can help you secure a vehicle through Prestige Value Car Rental, or you can use any other agency you choose. Whatever you decide, please let us know which agency you’re using, as the greeters for many villas will use the car rental agency as a back-up meeting point.
Gas now costs about the same in St. Martin as in the States. When you rent your car, ask the car rental agency where gas is currently cheaper (Dutch or French side). On the French side, many gas pumps automatically convert the price into dollars, while on the Dutch side, the conversion is less clear. For this reason, you may want to pay in Antillean Guilders on the Dutch side.
