Did you know that the Dead Man’s Chest was real?

It is an uninhabited island that has no fresh water or trees and only sparse vegetation. It is actually called, “Dead Chest” and is little more than a large rock outcropping located just under one half mile north east of Deadman’s Bay on Peter Island, British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean.

In the early 1700s the pirate known as Blackbeard punished a mutinous crew by marooning them on Dead (Man’s) Chest. Each was given a bottle of rum in hope that they would kill each other. But when he returned at the end of 30 days he found that 15 had survived.

Hence the full the version of the legendary song:

Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest
Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!

Even though Dead Chest Island in the Caribbean has never been developed for tourism; it has been named a National Park. It is described as “eerie and infamous” by historians.
