The famous legend of the Marostica chess game in Italy is about a time when the city was under the rule of the Venetian Republic. The chess game was played to win the hand of the beautiful Lionora, daughter of the ruler of Marostica Taddeo Parisio. Two young warriors, Rinaldo d’Angarano and Vieri da Vallonara were both in love with Lionora. Instead of a bloodshedding dual after the tragic death of Romeo and Juliet, an edict was issued by Cangrande delta Scala proposing an alternative solution. The contenders had to demonstrate their abilities of worthiness by becoming a winner of strategy to have the hand of Lionora. Whereas, the loser would have the hand of Taddeo’s younger sister, Oldrada.
This edict created the first exciting game of Chess in Marostica Italy. It was held in the Piazza del Castello with the presence of the nobility and the people. The game was played with real people, all armed and marked in white or black just like the classic game of chess.
Have a look at this timeless re-enactment held in the famous Piazza degli Scacchi.
