Cayman Brac and Capt. Keith Tibbetts
The Capt. Keith Tibbetts (known to the Soviets as SKR-471) is the only Russian warship in the Western Hemisphere that is within recreational diving limits. The Capt. Keith Tibbetts was a Koni class, anti-submarine warfare frigate built by the Soviet Union. The Koni class were known in the Soviet Union as Project 1159. 14 were built in Zelenodolsk shipyard between 1975 and 1988. Only a few of these vessels remain in service today. The Capt. Keith Tibbetts was sunk off the north coast of Cayman Brac in 1996.
It has become an impressive site. The bottom of its bow sits in sand at 110 feet. The stern juts out over the drop-off. The top deck is at 40 feet. So the Capt. Keith Tibbetts is a great multi-level dive.
