Happy National Winnie the Pooh Day!
~~Oh, yes, I’m rumbly in my tumbly. Time for something sweet.~~
“Winnie-the-Pooh,” as he was originally called, first appeared in a story written by A.A. Milne, who based the characters off his young owner Christopher Robin and the boy’s stuffed animals. The original toy bear was named after Winnie (short for “Winnipeg”).
During World War I, a Canadian soldier named Harry Colebourn made a pet of a black bear cub he bought from a hunter for $20. He named it Winnipeg—or “Winnie” for short. The bear became his troop’s mascot and later a resident of the London Zoological Gardens. There, she was an adored attraction, especially to a little boy named Christopher Robin Milne, son of author A.A. Milne. He named his own teddy after her. Most of Christopher’s toys are on display at the New York Public Library.
Disney Cast member Sterling Price Holloway, recipient of the Disney Legend award, was the voice for: Winnie the Pooh, Cheshire Cat, Kaa, Roquefort, Mr. Stork, Flower, Amos Mouse and more.
At Disney World:
Before the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh attraction arrived in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom; there was Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. When Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride was closed to make room for the Winnie the Pooh attraction, many Disney guests were sad and wanted Mr. Toad to stay. As the Pooh ride starts, there are several framed photos. One of these photos shows Mr. Toad handing Winnie the Pooh the deed to the attraction as a gesture of Mr. Toad’s support for Winnie the Pooh.
Want to ride the Winnie the Pooh attraction? CaribbeanDays can take you there!
What’s to Come:
Disney is developing a live action Winnie The Pooh film! A grown-up Christopher Robin returns to the Hundred Acre Wood to reunite with Pooh and friends. But Sterling Holloway will always be near and dear to my heart.
