July 7, 2006, Disney released the film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. It is the second installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series and the sequel to The Curse of the Black Pearl. Although these films are labeled fantasies; did you realize that the stories are based on actual pirates and places? For instance, Dead Man’s Chest is real.

It is an uninhabited island that has no fresh water or trees and only sparse vegetation. It is actually called, “Dead Chest” and is little more than a large rock outcropping located just under one half mile north east of Deadman’s Bay on Peter Island, British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean.

In the early 1700s the pirate known as Blackbeard (who is also real!) punished a mutinous crew by marooning them on Dead (Man’s) Chest. Each was given a bottle of rum in hope that they would kill each other. But when he returned at the end of 30 days he found that 15 had survived.

The pirates and places are real and the legends are a part of what makes the Caribbean mystical and magical! This is why Disney’s Pirates franchise is so successful. The magic came from reality.
