The Grand Canyon/Primeval World diorama
In 1958 Disneyland created an addition to the “Grand Canyon” diorama (what was once a long tunnel through a backstage service area) so that guests could better virtual scenes of the Grand Canyon on a train ride. The diorama, which includes the park’s only taxidermic animals in lifelike poses, is the longest in the world. Painted on a single piece of seamless canvas and representing the view from the canyon’s south rim, the rear of the diorama measures 306 feet (93 m) long, 34 feet (10 m) high and is covered with 300 gallons (1,100 L) of paint.
Opening day of this Grand Circle Tour, on March 31, 1958, Walt Disney himself piloted the engine through the tunnel to view the 306-foot-long diorama which, at the time, was described as the longest diorama in the world. The tour features artwork from scenic artist Delmer Yoakum and contains sounds from Ferde Grofé’s “Grand Canyon Suite.”
