Disney Legends Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston of the Nine Old Men

On January 21, 1935, Animator Ollie Johnston is hired at $17 a week by the Disney Studio. He will start work 2 days later as an in-betweener and eventually go on to become one of Walt’s “Nine Old Men”, as well as a Disney Legend.

Ollie Johnston was recognized by the Walt Disney Company with its Disney Legend Award in 1989. His work was recognized with the National Medal of Arts in 2005.

Disney Legend Johnston became a directing animator beginning with Pinocchio, in 1940. He contributed to most Disney animated features, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Fantasia and Bambi. His last full work for Disney came with The Rescuers, in which he was caricatured as one of the film’s characters, the cat Rufus.
