Beautiful vistas, historic sites, and shopping areas
How you take in St. Croix’s beautiful vistas, historic sites, and shopping areas is all up to you. The most popular way to tour St. Croix is by taxi, but you can also take a walking tour of the historic sites or do a self-guided tour in your rental car.
There are plenty of taxis on island, including safaris – open-air trucks that have covered bench seating in the back – perfect for an island tour. Since these vehicles can hold about 15 people, they are often used for group tours. We recommend Sweeny’s Safari Tour (340-773-6700), which combines history, politics, religion, cultural traditions, and botany along with a little comic relief. Sweeny’s red and white bus leaves from The Old Scale House in downtown Christiansted around 10 AM.
The St. Croix Heritage Trail (340-772-0598, www.StCroixHeritageTrail.com) is a self-guided driving tour of the island’s historic sites and natural areas. The trail will take you to many of the island’s major historic attractions, such as Whim Plantation Museum, St. George’s Village Botanical Gardens, and Christiansted Historic Site. For a small fee, you can purchase an information-packed brochure with a detailed map at many hotels, rental car agencies, and tourist information centers.
Take a walking tour of historic Christiansted with the help of a “Walking Tour Guide” available at the Division of Tourism.
