June 9, 2006 – Disney Released the film Cars

The movie’s original working title was Route 66. But the title was changed to Cars to prevent confusion with the 1960 television show which was named Route 66.

The film Cars was dedicated to cast member Joe Ranft, who died in a car accident 2005. Cars was the last film Joe Ranft worked on.

The cast members took a road trip along Rt. 66 so that many of the characters and places depicted in the film would be inspired by real people and places.

– The Cozy Cone Motel’s design was based on the Wigwam Motels in Holbrook, AZ and Rialto, CA. These motels had individual cabin shaped teepees.

– Ramone’s House of Body Art is based on the U-Drop Inn in Shamrock, Tx.

– The billboard for Lizzie’s Curio Shop reading “HERE IT IS” with an image of a Model T is based on the Jack Rabbit Trading Post signage in Joseph City, Az.

– The Sheriff is voiced by Michael Wallis who is the author of Route 66: The Mother Road.
