NOAA and the Mapping of the U.S. Virgin Islands
NOAA is an American scientific agency within the United States Department of Commerce that focuses on the conditions of the oceans and the atmosphere. They provide early warning data of weather, charts seas, and guides the use and protection of ocean and coastal resources and conducts research to provide understanding and improve stewardship of the environment.
One of these tasks includes mapping of deep water caves. NOAA explored the seas surrounding the U.S. Virgin Islands for deep water caves. They used multibeam sonar to survey the areas and created a high resolution map of the seafloor. The provided data of cave presences. Then they deployed a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to investigate the identified sites. Divers were then sent in to investigate the caves.
This data benefits tourists, researchers, divers and fishermen. CaribbeanDays can not only set you up with a villa stay; but we can introduce you to expert divers that can take you out on explorations of these areas.
