Mature coconut palms cast dappled shade on the lawns, dense plantings and two fish ponds filled with water lilies. Depending on the season, the air is perfumed with the scent of Frangipani and, at dusk, the all-pervading fragrance of the Lady of the Night. Clinging to the branches and trunks of the trees are the jewel-like colors of tree orchids. The electric green flowers of the rare Jade Vine, one of only two or three on the island, dazzle the eye. So do the vivid shades of the Bougainvilleas, Heliconias (including the sought after “Sexy Pinks”) and Ginger Lilies.

The garden is very much a part of The Great House experience in the way that the boundary between indoors and outdoors seems to melt away. There are comfortable seating areas outside and flowers from the garden are brought into the house to complement a year-round display of white orchids. And, this being the tropics, the gardens also produce their own harvest of edible fruit, including limes, bread fruit and bananas which we put to good use in the kitchen. We also grow our own herbs at the back of the kitchen.

The sea is warm and blue. The swimming is safe. The sand is white and fine as powder. Coconut palms grow just above the high water mark. And although every beach in Barbados is public, it feels tucked away and secluded.

The beach is just a few seconds stroll from the house through the gardens. Overlooking it are the Gazebo and the Boardwalk. Both are perfect locations for savoring romantic dinners or enjoying the sun downers with a perfectly mixed cocktail. The beach is also where you board our private boat to explore the neighboring waters or indulge in your favorite water sports.

The food is one of The Great House’s greatest pleasures and our extensive menus genuinely cater for all tastes. Breakfast includes everything from fresh fruit to pancakes, smoked salmon and eggs to order. For lunch and dinner we prepare an ever-changing menu of freshly cooked dishes, followed by an assortment of desserts and cheeses. Between meals, too, we serve a parade of refreshing snacks such as mini-ice-creams, sorbets, cookies, cheese straws and marinaded olives.

Our culinary approach is based on sourcing local ingredients wherever possible. We serve locally caught fish and rely heavily on the island’s seasonal fruit. We also prepare and adapt local recipes, and give classic dishes a Barbadian twist by substituting local produce for some of the ingredients. The result is a culinary experience that combines the flavor of Barbados with the best of international cuisine.

Many guests, particularly those with particular nutritional requirements, tell us they have never felt so reassured about the quality of their food when away from home. Our kitchen inspires this kind of confidence because we possess a high level of dietary and nutritional expertise in-house and we use only fresh, healthy and high quality ingredients with no additives.

Its beach side setting, lush gardens and traditional colonial architecture lend themselves to every kind of occasion, from formal to relaxed to glamorous. It also has a wealth of settings – the pool, gardens, boardwalk, beach, even the boat – to allow you to create a unique and memorable event.

The Great House’s staff will work closely with you during your week’s stay to make sure every detail is precisely how you want it. We can dress the various areas of the house and gardens, mix a special cocktail or prepare your favorite classic to perfection, arrange music and entertainment. We can create full menus for the wedding meals for small groups or parties of 100 or more. We can cater for any special nutritional needs, so all your guests can enjoy the occasion with complete confidence. We can even bake your cake if you wish.
